SYA Homecoming 2012

July 25, 2012 — The Annual Homecoming was held at the JFK Library and Museum on the evening of July 21. Nearly 150 guests attended the event, including alumni, incoming 2013 students and their families, former faculty, SYA staff and Resident Directors Denis Brochu, Griffin Morse, Hilde Becker and Patrick Scanlon.
The program began in the Theater where a panel consisting of the Resident Directors and young alumni Kyle Laracey CN’12, Annie Jones FR’12, Kayla McLaughlin IT’12, Elisabeth Perez ES’12 and Andrew Sanborn VN’12 represented each country and spoke of their SYA experiences. Perhaps Kyle summed it up best when he said, “Most people don't think ‘all the world’s your playground,’ but SYAers do. They know that the world is their playground and that they can and should do something with it.
“This change in our thought processes certainly didn't happen all at once. Over the course of the year, every day being put out of our comfort zone — that's what did it; being with great people, great friends from all over the country, with different views on everything — that’s what did it. “
With a spectacular view of the Boston skyline as a backdrop, the reception held in Smith Hall included comments from SYA President Jack Creeden and former trustee Stephen Foster ES’65. Foster spoke of the great success of The Campaign for Spain and duly noted the productive year the Spain Class of 2012 spent in the new space. Guests viewed a time lapse video of the demolition and construction of Casa Foster 64, SYA Spain’s new home. Executive Director Nelson Chase recognized SYA China faculty member Tim Pettus on his retirement after teaching a precedent 10 years with SYA. Pettus was later presented with a mantel clock.
Lively conversations while nibbling on wonderful hors d’oeuvres and sipping beverages provided by former trustee Carlos Alvarez FR’00P rounded out a most delightful evening.
